Pantone started out as a commercial printing and ink company in the early 1950's. After an employee by the name of Lawrence Herbert created an efficient and simple way to keep track on all the different color pigments the company carried, he called them Pantone Swatches. Soon enough the swatches, which were nothing more than little cardboard tiles with all the available colors took off. Herbert eventually bought out his employers and focused the business entirely on his Pantone Swatches. The colors are labeled by a unique numbering system Lawrence Herbert created that is unique to Pantone. Recently they have expanded their color selection to include metallic and fluorescent colors. Pantone Swatches are often referred to as Pantone Smart Card. Most popular series of swatches currently is TCX which means Textile Cotton followed by TPX which means Textile Paper.
